Top 5 tips to Protect your Eyes

Most of us do not think twice about piling on eye make-up or staring at screens all day.

Yet, it is so easy to take our peepers for granted, potentially leading to problems with sight or other conditions like dry eyes or conjunctivitis.

And as the tenth annual National Eye Health Week will take place from 23 to 29 this September, we spoke to Mr. Sheraz Daya, medical director of Centre for Sight and consultant ophthalmic surgeon, for his recommendations for beautiful eyes.

1. Get enough sleep

Make sure you get enough shuteye each night – this is essential for eye health as sleep allows your eyes to fully rest, repair and recover, he told us.

2. Eat well

Consuming a healthy diet is critical, as vitamins A, C, and E, plus minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. In addition, current research shows that consuming yellow and green vegetables can help prevent age-related macular generation, a leading cause of blindness, stated Mr. Daya.

3. Exercise

Whether it be regular walks or full gym workouts, it is critical to get enough exercise. “Exercise improves blood circulation which, in turn, improves oxygen levels to the eyes and the removal of toxins,” the expert shared.

4. Avoid dry air

Aim your car vents down at your feet rather than at your face, as air conditioning takes the moisture out of your eyes. This can lead to serious dryness, he noted.

5. Go to the optometrist

Ensure you visit your optometrist regularly for a full eye examination, even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.
Annual eye exams are important to detect and prevent any issues, added Mr. Daya. During pregnancy watch for any changes, such as dry/itchy eyes, puffy eyelids, or visual changes.
